◆ FROM THE DESK
Welcome back. This week’s episode is a conversation about the unglamorous work that makes industrial software trustworthy: Klaus Landsdorf, who maintains the Modbus and OPC UA packages many Node-RED factory flows depend on, on why no release of his ships below 92% code coverage. It pairs neatly with this week’s news, where the common thread is trust — a ransomware group that has hit at least 600 organisations, and a run of sharp questions about how AI should be governed once it touches operational technology.

◆ NEW ON THE PODCAST

Ep. 61 — Open Source at Industrial Scale: Node-RED, Modbus, and the IIoT Future
Klaus Landsdorf, CEO of Iniationware and creator of PLUS for Node-RED (P4NR), first looked at Node-RED in 2015 as a favour. He found gaps in Modbus queue timing that made existing packages unsafe for real industrial environments, so he rebuilt the package from scratch — with a rule he has held ever since: no release ships below 92% code coverage.
In this conversation with Phil and Ed:
• Why industrial software demands a different quality standard
• ISA-95 as a 30-year framework that already describes what “unified namespace” and “edge computing” are reaching for
• The open-source sustainability model behind P4NR, and how AI is being used in its development today
“ISA-95 is over thirty years old, but it brings together everything that exists today.” — Klaus Landsdorf

OT SECURITY · RANSOMWARE
SafePay ransomware: a joint advisory from the FBI, CISA and international partners
CISA, the FBI, the U.S. Secret Service and law-enforcement partners in Germany and the UK have issued a joint #StopRansomware advisory on SafePay, a group active since August 2024 with at least 600 victims across North America, South America, Europe and Australia. Initial access comes through stolen or guessed passwords, exploited edge devices and VPNs, and phishing. The mitigations are familiar and worth re-checking against your plant’s remote access: patch internet-facing devices, enforce MFA on VPNs, keep offline immutable backups, and segment the network.

INDUSTRIAL AI · GOVERNANCE
Governing AI agents in operational technology cybersecurity
The argument: AI agents change behaviour with every model upgrade, which means boards may be making OT risk decisions without realising it. Worth reading alongside a second piece this week on the standards landscape, where the Skkynet and EverLine guests note that no single standard covers AI in manufacturing.

INDUSTRIAL AI · PRACTICE
How industrial AI earns production trust
Sanjay Mahato of Amazon Web Services and Tauseef Ahmed of Grayhawk Consulting Group discuss keeping AI consistent across a global factory network, and whether a model update that changes operator trust should trigger re-validation. A practical complement to the governance piece above.
