The Unified Namespace Is a Discipline, Not a Product
Every vendor with an MQTT broker now sells a “unified namespace.” But a UNS is not something you buy — it is an agreement about how your plant names, structures and shares data, enforced consistently across every system that touches it. The broker is the easy part. The hard part is the model: a single, hierarchical, self-describing source of truth that OT and IT both trust, where a tag means the same thing whether it is read by a SCADA screen, a historian, or an ML pipeline.
Teams that treat the UNS as a product bolt it on beside the same siloed, poll-based, vendor-specific flows they already had — and wonder why nothing got simpler. Teams that treat it as a discipline start with the naming convention and the report-by-exception contract, then let MQTT Sparkplug B carry it. AI Is Only as Good as the Data Layer Beneath It
The predictable failure mode of industrial AI is a machine-learning pitch that arrives before the data groundwork exists — before assets report on change instead of on a fixed scan, before there is one source of truth across vendor SCADA screens, before operators trust the tools enough to act on them. The model can only ever be as good as the data feeding it.
The teams getting real value invert the order. They fix the data architecture first — a clean UNS, report-by-exception, role-appropriate presentation — and only then layer analytics on top. The breakthrough is rarely the algorithm; it is early, trustworthy signals that give operators the lead time to order the part, book the crane and schedule the outage before something breaks.
