One Gas Turbine vs a Hundred Wind Turbines: Why the Energy Transition Is Breaking the Old OT Playbook
The energy industry’s shift to distributed renewable assets isn’t just a generation technology change — it’s an operations and data infrastructure problem that most digital transformation programmes were never designed to solve. Where a gas turbine is a single, centralised, predictable asset, a wind farm is a hundred individual machines spread across geography, running on weather conditions no operator controls. Managing one gas turbine and managing ten wind farms of a hundred turbines each are fundamentally different engineering and data challenges.
Yet the SCADA systems, operational dashboards, and data architectures deployed across the sector were largely designed for the centralised model. Vendor-specific protocols, inconsistent UI standards across OEM screens, and fixed-interval scan rates that record the same temperature reading every half-second regardless of whether anything changed — these aren’t just technical debt. They’re operational bottlenecks that compound at renewable scale. Lean frontline teams inherit PDF report fatigue, cognitive overload, and tools that were built to inform rather than to guide a decision. Worse, OEM warranty clauses often restrict what asset owners can actually do with data from their own assets.
The information asset owners need to optimise mixed energy fleets — cross-asset performance comparison, failure prediction months in advance, maintenance scheduled around wind speed forecasts — is either not captured, not standardised, or locked away. Closing that gap requires rethinking not just the technology stack but the entire relationship between solution providers, operators, and the assets they manage. The solution providers have to evolve, not the operators.

For industrial asset owners managing mixed energy fleets, the promise of AI-driven predictive maintenance has historically been oversold and underdelivered.
