OPC-UA Is Not the Only Answer: Why Native PLC Communication Is Making Its Comeback
For the past decade, OPC-UA has been positioned as the definitive answer to industrial interoperability. Backed by industry consortiums and major automation vendors, it became the default specification for shop-floor data exchange — layered on top of PLC programs that already knew how to speak their own language perfectly well. But a growing number of engineers are asking a harder question: if the machine already speaks Modbus, S7, or EtherNet/IP natively, why add a translation stack between the device and the data?
The answer, increasingly, is cost. OPC-UA implementations carry real overhead — in CPU cycles, memory footprint, commercial stack licensing, and the diagnostic complexity of debugging a protocol that abstracts away exactly the details engineers need when something breaks. On resource-constrained PLCs and edge devices, that overhead compounds fast. Open-source projects like Apache PLC4X are exposing how much simpler device-level communication can be when you skip the translation layer and talk directly to the controller in its native dialect. The question for IIoT architects in 2026 is not whether OPC-UA has value — it does — but whether it belongs at every layer of your stack.
